Mr. Tarun Katiyar, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Power Trading Company Limited (TPTCL) and Chief-Distribution(North) and T&D(BD), Tata Power, brings with him over three decades of rich experience in the power sector. His professional journey encompasses diverse roles in engineering, strategy formulation, business development, and leadership. In his current role, Mr. Katiyar has laid a strong foundation for transforming TPTCL into a full-scale energy services company, with a progressive focus on delivering integrated energy solutions and steering growth and diversification in the T&D businesses of Tata Power.
Over the course of his distinguished career, Mr. Katiyar has held several transformative roles, including his tenure at Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, where he led groundbreaking initiatives such as the installation of India’s first megawatt-scale rooftop solar plant. As General Manager and Chief of Business Development at Tata Power, he spearheaded the company’s growth through the acquisition of greenfield and brownfield projects, significantly enhancing its market presence.
Mr. Katiyar’s deep-rooted networks in the domestic and international power sectors have been instrumental in forging landmark partnerships. Notably, he has played a key role in Tata Power’s strategic collaboration with the Royal Government of Bhutan for the development of 5 GW of hydro and renewable energy potential. The MoU identifies several key projects aimed at harnessing sustainable energy while strengthening regional energy cooperation. Recently, a Power Sale Agreement was signed between TPTCL and Khorlochhu Hydro Power Limited for the supply of power from the 600 MW Khorlochhu HEP in Bhutan.
With overarching focus on the key T&D businesses such as Tata Power Ajmer Distribution Limited covering 1.5 lakh customers within a 200 sq km distribution area in Ajmer, TP Power Plus Limited- responsible for installation and O&M of 1.86 Million smart meters in Raipur area, Tata Power Renewable Microgrids business, having a vision to roll out 10,000 microgrids and provide sustainable, cost-effective, quality power through intelligent amalgamation of cutting-edge technologies, deploy and maintain the electrical utility services in the upcoming Noida International Airport, and an aim to quadruple the T&D growth metric by 2030, Mr Katiyar has demonstrated exceptional leadership in driving operational excellence, strategic expansion, and digital transformation across Tata Power’s transmission and distribution (T&D) portfolio.
His contributions span across major distribution, transmission, and energy services projects. Key achievements include the acquisition of Odisha DISCOMs, which expanded Tata Power’s customer base by 9.5 million across 1.5 lakh square kilometres. Mr. Katiyar has also played a pivotal role in overseeing significant transmission projects, such as the South-East Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Company Limited (spanning 1,500 km of 400 kV and 765 kV systems), the 153-km NRSS XXXVI Transmission System, the 340-km Bikaner–Neemrana Transmission Project, Jalpura–Khurja Power Transmission Ltd., and more recently, the Paradip and Gopalpur Transmission projects.
He has also led the IT implementation project for the Goa Electricity Department under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (RAPDRP), and managed consultancy services for distribution infrastructure improvement across multiple utilities in India. A landmark achievement under his leadership has been the electrical infrastructure and energy services project for the upcoming Noida International Airport.
Internationally, Mr. Katiyar has led Tata Power’s advisory and management services in Nigeria, Tajikistan, and Mozambique. In Nigeria, he served as the Technical & Management Service Provider for five distribution companies. In Tajikistan, he played a pivotal role in power sector reforms and the enhancement of distribution services. His strategic and technical leadership has helped global utilities overcome challenges and optimize operations.
With his visionary leadership, strategic foresight, and deep sectoral expertise, Mr. Tarun Katiyar continues to drive Tata Power Trading’s transformation into a dynamic and future-ready energy solutions provider, contributing significantly to both national and international energy landscapes.
